Introduction
The Institute of Solar Technology (IST) is a scientific and educational organisation, established in 1980 and located in Thessaloniki. The IST aims at encouraging research, development and exploitation of Renewable Energy Sources (RES), while establishing international collaborations, as well as proposing more efficient policies for the wider dissemination and implementation of RES.

Within its objectives, IST has already organised twelve successful National Conferences on Renewable Energy Sources; the latest one, in which this special issue is dedicated was organized on April 7th-9th, 2021, as a virtual event.

The Special Issue aims at highlighting the current research and implementation aspects, towards the broader dissemination of RES, including works applying experimental and simulation analysis.

More specifically, the thematic areas of interest are:
1. Solar, wind, hydraulic, geothermal, wave energy - Systems and applications.
2. Biomass, waste and garbage as energy sources.
3. Bioclimatic design and physics of buildings.
4. Energy saving and rational use of energy – nZEBs
5. Energy storage systems.
6. RES and environment.
7. Desalination, air-conditioning, H2 production using RES.
8. Energy smart grids.
9. General issues related to RES, such as energy and climate change, energy climatology, energy policy, energy potential, integration of RES in energy systems, education.
Keywords

RES; energy systems; energy storage; energy production; energy saving; buildings; biomass; desalination; smart grids; environment

Manuscript Submission Information

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor been under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings). All manuscripts will be thoroughly refereed through a single-blinded peer-review process. A guide for manuscript submission is available at Submission Instructions.
